The Best Self-Defense Weapon to Protect
Yourself With
If you’re concerned about your safety in public, a self-defense weapon may help you feel more confident. While they don’t guarantee that you won’t become the victim of crime, they do provide you with more options should things turn ugly. There are many options available when it comes to self-defense weapons. Given the choices of tactical pens, personal alarms, self-defense weapons, and self-defense weapon tools can be part of the best self-defense weapons that you can carry. The best defense against potential threats varies from your own home, home defense, where hand-to-hand combat will happen, all the way to walking on the street. What you decide to carry will give you peace of mind and should have quick access and easy access for deployment. All this without legal trouble is the best choice.
The last thing you need after successfully defending yourself are criminal charges that you will need legal advice to help you stay out of trouble. Center on an effective weapon, an effective tool, and an effective way will be an excellent choice for your personal protection. You must understand the self-defense laws so you don't run afoul of law enforcement officers, and that is the bottom line. Knowing the laws is an extra layer of security against a potential attacker. Your self-defense kit should consist of different weapons, best non-lethal self defense weapons, and all based on home security plus public security. Your personal preference coupled with the best non-lethal self-defense weapons, self-defense products, and ease of use, will keep you out of state prison. These are all good choice worth mentioning before we get into the meat of the blog post.
One last thing is sexual assault. In that case, when you use a self-defense item and good self defense weapons, they will be scrutinized by the law. It's a good idea to know that you are using legal items and not things like brass knuckles which are illegal in the United States. Brass knuckles are a great choice of what not to have! Remember that the most popular self-defense weapons might not be legal where you intend to deploy them. The second amendment is a basic premise but just insure you are legal where ever you might need your self defense protection.
Overall self-defense weapons
It's no secret that criminals often have a weapon of some kind. But when it comes time to protect yourself, don't be intimidated. Here are a few self-defense weapons you can use on your own if you ever find yourself in an uncomfortable situation: pepper spray/mace, Taser, stun gun or other non-lethal weapons, pocket knife, handgun, and revolver. Find out which self-defense weapon will fit your lifestyle and personality best – then buy it and keep it handy! If nothing else, you'll feel more at ease during your morning jog after purchasing one of these defensive devices. And you might just save your life by knowing how to defend yourself. Just remember: an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!
Looking at the list of potential weapons above, I would suggest a non-lethal self-defense weapon, like the Defender. I also carry pepper gel, which has many advantages over any other "spray" chemical weapons, more on that later, but for me, I suggest a self-defense weapon known as the "Defender."
So how exactly does it work? First of all, you must be legally allowed by law to carry a concealed weapon. If you can legally own a handgun, then most states will allow you to own and carry your very own TASER. However, not every state allows open carrying in public areas like streets and sidewalks (some only permit open carry on private property). Check out your local laws on both ownership and carrying handguns before buying or ordering one of these life-saving devices.
Self-defense weapons
If you are going to get a self-defense weapon, train with it, and carry it, you might want to have it legal everywhere you go! The Defender is designed for civilian self-defense. The Defender is a nonlethal self-defense weapon that will temporarily discourage an attacker after you use it on them. Using the "bonk" or kinetic aspect of the weapon causes the attacker lots of pain; if you use the point on the attacker, this can cause injury. This gives you time to run away from any dangerous situation. This brings us to the heart of self-defense; pain compliance or bodily injury.
Pain vs. injury
Self-defense comes in two forms: pain compliance and pain from bodily injury. We always say there are three things in martial arts: structure, function, and death. A non-lethal self-defense weapon like the Defender flows smoothly between the structure and function part of the human body. If I'm sounding like a doctor here, it's because I am a Ph.D., and many call me the "doctor of death,"; which I would like to think I'm more the doctor of life. Although that life part might be through the pain of a bad guy, they get a chance to rethink what they are doing rather than being killed.
In the old days, we martial arts practitioners used pain compliance to get our attackers to rethink their actions. We spend years learning how to apply pain to a body in increasing amounts until the desired result is reached. Sometimes, we just move the scale of pain to the breaking point or beyond if we don't get the desired result. This is especially true with multiple attackers, but I'm getting lost in the part here. In the world of pure on the street self-defense, you can not be a nice guy/gal. You must strike to the point of the matter, and that is to stop the attack/aggression quickly.
Given today's world, we have seen the need to move the scale to cause incredible amounts of pain or remove structure from the attacker's body which we call "injury." If an attacker gets in your car to carjack, you don't want to be a mister nice guy. In this case, you need to cause serious injury to the attacker or carjacker, like stabbing them in the neck with a very aggressive self-defense weapon [perhaps a Defender 2, Eckmeier, Dragon Edge, or a Typhon].
You can use many weapons as a martial artist or everyday citizen. However, when it comes to inflicting pain or injury, none of them do it like a Defender. Given the environment today, the lawless violent attacks on innocent people, and the horrific results of these attacks, it is without question we need to up our game. We need to come away from "pain compliance" and scale up to structure injury for deterrence. The more aggressive Defenders, like the "Extraordinary" line of Defenders, are what we need to carry and use on today's attackers. Get yours today! Train with it, carry it, and use it if you need to protect yourself or your loved ones.
One last mention in this section is a tactical pen. Although I like them, they are illegal in many places and can not be carried on most public transportation, i.e., aircraft, trains, or other screened public transportation. The same is true for a lethal weapon or even personal alarms!
The legal aspects of self-defense
If you're going to carry a weapon for self-defense, make sure you know what you can and can't do. Defending yourself with a weapon is legal if: - The person being attacked is in reasonable fear of death or serious injury - You believe they have a deadly weapon or something that can inflict serious damage. According to George Peterson, executive director of the American Society for Law Enforcement Training (ASLET), most martial arts weapons are neither deadly nor inflict serious bodily harm. If someone attacks you with one, it's probably not going to be considered self-defense under U.S. law unless they use it against someone else in your presence.
If you carry a gun for your protection, that is great, but it comes with some substantial legal ramifications. If you're carrying a weapon and use it in self-defense, you have to be able to articulate why you felt threatened enough to use deadly force. If someone attacks you with a martial arts weapon and they're using it against someone else in your presence (like their partner or child), then that's probably considered self-defense under U.S. law because they are using deadly force against another person in your presence - even if that person is not yourself. For example, if someone swings at their partner and misses but then swings at them again, striking them on their arm or leg; and then continues swinging at their partner; all of these would be considered acts of deadly force being used against another person in your presence and therefore could be considered self-defense under the U.S. legal code.
If you use a gun with deadly force, then you are in another sticky situation. The laws regarding self-defense and guns vary state by state, but generally speaking, if you pull out your weapon (or fire it) and kill someone in self-defense, there is no duty to retreat. That means that if they come at you with a weapon - or even just their fists - you can shoot them without having any obligation to run away first. However, if they have a gun too, and they shoot back, it's not considered self-defense under the U.S. legal code.
If you use lethal force at all, then the game changes again. Look no further than New York City and the convenience store clerk that defended himself from an attacker. The attacker was beating the clerk, who then picked up a knife and stabbed the attacker. The attacker stopped but later died. Who was arrested? This poor clerk would be in jail for second-degree murder if it wasn't for Fox news! That is outrageous but it is what we the public are facing these days!
We have to face being attacked by lawless thugs, and then the city DAs are after us for protecting ourselves and "hurting" the attackers. Now that is genuinely OUTRAGEOUS and leads us to where we are about moving away from pain compliance to injury compliance. Get an aggressive Defender and call it a day. Oh, did I tell you the Defenders are not weapons? That's right, they are chef cooking tools thus, they are known as tools of self-defense opportunity. They even have their own website and do, in fact, work as a chef tool. So, get your chef tool today and prepare a better BBQ than ever before!
In the United States, many of our self defense options are not legal in all states. This can be problematic when you like some self defense tool and you find out, sometimes the wrong way, that you can not use or even have that tool for your self defense. I also like pepper gel but again it can't be legally carried on public transportation.
Baseball bat
A baseball bat is a powerful weapon that can be used for self defense if you are attacked. The bat should be used in a forward swinging motion towards any part of an attacker’s body, especially their knee or upper thigh region. This will cause excruciating pain and knock your assailant out of commission while you get away to safety.
Other weapons such as tasers, batons, or stun guns are also good options, but they must be within reach and accessible when using them. A baseball bat is easily stored around your home and is not too heavy. When an intruder tries to break into your home, it’s better to have a weapon that can provide you protection at a moment's notice rather than one that requires setup time. Be sure to use any weapon for self-defense only if you feel threatened, however, and remember that even with a weapon, there is no guarantee of winning!
There is a brand of a mini baseball bat that has been seen in street violence and other personal attacks. Other options are pepper spray or chemical sprays that can incapacitate an attacker for a short time, but these require you to be close enough for them to work. A baseball bat is ideal for situations where you need a weapon from a distance, as it is effective from anywhere in your home and even outside it. Make sure that no family members are hurt by trying out your new baseball bat for self-defense, however! It can cause serious injury if not used correctly, so practice with it first or consider getting professional training in its use before relying on it when danger comes knocking on your door.
The tactical pen
A pen as a self-defense weapon? Surely, you jest. But tactical pens are designed for more than simply signing documents and grading papers—in fact, they were originally developed by military personnel and law enforcement professionals. If you’re looking for an effective (and portable) self-defense weapon, consider adding a tactical pen to your safety arsenal. Here’s what you need to know before purchasing a tactical pen. Tactical pens vary in size, design, and function:
Tactical pens come in all shapes and sizes; however, their design is usually one of two types: fixed or retractable. Fixed models have a tip that doesn't retract, while retractable models have tips that can be extended with just a twist of the wrist. Regardless of whether you choose a fixed or retractable model, it's essential to keep in mind that some models can still be dangerous even if they aren't being used as weapons. In other words, don't try to open up your tactical pen into action if it's not meant for such use!
A final consideration to keep in mind when purchasing a tactical pen is deciding whether you want one that’s all metal or plastic. This will depend on your personal tastes and requirements. For example, a plastic model may be more practical if you live or work in areas with strict weapons rules. Likewise, an all-metal model might be more effective as a self-defense weapon because it's sturdier and capable of causing more damage. The type of ink that your tactical pen uses should also factor into your decision: Some models use water-based ink for convenience (no dried-out tips!), but others use thicker bulletproof ink for added protection against attackers. The last thing you need is for your pen's ink to dry up halfway through a stressful situation!
Although, if you are clever and do some research on regular pens, you can find or modify a commercially available writing pen that can be used as a tactical pen. I have personally found them at Walmart, and they do an excellent job of attacking pressure points plus strong enough to hold up under a self-defense situation.
Spray chemical weapons
Pepper spray is becoming more and more popular among residents of major cities who are afraid of being victimized by a home invasion. While pepper spray might not seem like much when you look at it, it has great stopping power when sprayed in a criminal's face, allowing even novices to incapacitate an assailant while they call for help or fight back. Plus, it’s lightweight and easy to carry with you. In fact, some states make carrying pepper spray a strong suggestion for women. If your home is susceptible to burglary and attempted assault, don't forget about pepper spray or other chemical weapons (like mace) as an option for protecting yourself if things go south inside your residence.
Another type of chemical weapon you can use for self-defense is mace. While it can be more powerful than pepper spray and even include the potential effect of temporarily blinding your attacker, that isn’t necessarily a good thing. If you use mace in an enclosed space, you could hurt yourself or others with the gas mace if you miss your target. It’s also much harder to get than pepper spray — not all countries allow its importation, and some states may require that you have a special license before purchasing mace. Additionally, depending on how well it was manufactured, it might only have one chance to work before being ineffective against your assailant.
Pepper gel is a great option for a chemical spray self-defense tool. I like the gel better than the spray for two big reasons. First, it's a gel, and once stuck on the target [eyes and face], it will stay there doing its job. It won't "smear off" or wash off easily and therefore is a gift that keeps on giving! Second, it is less susceptible to wind "redirection" when you are applying it to an attacker. You can easily carry pepper gel in your purse or pocket, and it's a lot less bulky than mace. Many people like pepper gel because you don't have to get as close to your attacker as you do with pepper spray.
Improvised chemical weapons
Now, there are many ways to make a weapon. As a Ninjutsu practitioner since 1972, we do learn a lot about making our own weapons. You can make simple yet very effective chemical weapons for use in a self-defense situation. A simple example is "blinding powder," which we learn to use. Today, this can be a simple thing to make as it consists of three household found items. First, an abrasive element, second, a quick burn agent; and three, a long-term burn agent. This would be equal parts of salt or sugar, black pepper, red pepper flakes, or cayenne pepper.
This mixture can be thrown into your attacker's eyes where it works its wonder. The powder cakes onto the eye. Next, the attacker "blinks" and scrapes the cubistic salt or sugar across the cornea in the eye, thus scratching it. Once it's scratched, the quick and long-term agent goes into that injury and burns the eyes so your attacker can't see anymore. If he can't see you, he can't attack you! Other than the cornea scratch, which will take days to heal, there is no permanent damage done by the blinding powder.
A little-known improvised chemical spray that is non-lethal and inexpensive to acquire is "wasp spray." This spray can reach out to over 15 feet in a stream, which you can "steer" onto the target [the attacker's eyes and face]. These might be difficult to carry around with you, but there are holsters for "bear spray" that can be used to hold wasp spray. If you watch some of the bounty hunter's videos, you see them carry bear pepper spray in these leg holsters. However, these are great for home self-defense as you can have them at the home's entry points and where you spend most of your time at home.
A note here is that if you decide to add these types of weapons to your self-defense skill mix, check the State Laws and local laws for any issues. Violent crime has a new thing they do: sue you, the victim, so make sure to restrict anything that might be used against you in a court of law.

How to carry your Defender
We have four easy carry options for the Defender.
1) A standard breakaway lanyard. Our standard lanyard is made up of a small twisted cord that is connected on either side of a "breakaway" snap. The snap is connected between the two twisted cords. One cord goes to the Defender, and the other cord to a "spring hook" that hooks onto the belt loop of your pants or the like. A quick pull on the Defender, and it is in your hand, ready to use. When you are finished with your Defender, just put the snap back together. The snap is rated for 1000 snaps, so that, hopefully, is a lifetime of self-protection.
2) A robust clip kydex holster. We have a kydex holster with two half "sphere" indentations that capture the Defenders by the "digit capture hole" in most of our tools. We then placed a robust clip that will put this holster on your pants, outside your pockets, or the like. A quick pull on the Defender and the holster "releases" your Defender into your hand. You can place this rig on a purse, outside clothing, backpack, or even web gear for the military.
3) An adjustable cord neck kydex holster. Now, this is a fantastic option. It has one of the kydex holsters with the sphere capturing system, and we thread 550 cord into the holster. The 550 cord has "slip knots" that slide in one direction but don't slide very well in the other. So, you can adjust the holster to be up close to the top of your chest or down low. It can even work as an underarm side holster too.
4) A solo kydex holster you can adapt to your personal gear. This is our bare kydex holster with the sphere capture system that you can attach anywhere you like. The attachment method is of your making, so this adds a bunch of flexibility to how you want to carry your Defender.
Conclusion
In conclusion, we have moved away from pain compliance techniques for self-defense and moved toward stopping the attack with injury strikes. Some of these strikes will take away both structure and function of the human body. Due to the violence of the street attacks, we have found ourselves in a new world of self-defense and need to adapt our training to meet the new level of aggression.
We covered other weapons in this blog post too. These other tools have their pros and cons, but you can look at each with a new mindset. The baseball bat or the mini one can be very useful and have plausible deniability when asked why you have one. The same is true for improvised chemical weapons such as blinding powder. It is simply a spicy mixture [completely eatable, too] that goes along with your new chef tool [Defender].
